On December 1, 2025, Eximbanka CEO Rastislav Podhorec, MBA and Director of International Relations Matúš Šársky participated in the meeting of the Technical Working Group on financing Small Modular Reactors (SMR) within the European Industrial Alliance for SMR in Brussels.
Eximbanka has been a full member of the Alliance since its creation in 2024 and is also the only financial institution in the entire membership base. We actively participate in the work of the technical working group with the aim of identifying current opportunities and limitations for supporting and developing the development and deployment of SMR technology within the European Union.
At this meeting we focused on the current instruments for financing SMRs: we looked at the key role of export credit agencies in mobilising private capital for SMR projects. These are generally still in the development or early implementation phase in the EU, which is associated with a wide range of risks. In order to mitigate them, to weaken potentially negative impacts, as well as the overall development of the market, supply chains and the whole SMR environment, the involvement of a range of actors is needed: from the relevant ministries and regulators (nuclear watchdog, licensing authorities, etc.) to state and commercial financial institutions or equity funds.
Eximbanka is ready to actively seek solutions, together with domestic and foreign partners, to support Slovak SMR projects that are currently in the preparation stage, as well as to support the export of our unique technologies, expertise, and capabilities in the field of nuclear energy utilization abroad.
