Introducing Global Gateway
Global Gateway is an initiative of the European Union with a global scope, which aims at targeted and coordinated support for strategic development projects in partner countries and at the same time at strengthening the competitiveness of European exporters. The Global Gateway aims to mobilise €300 billion of strategic investment worldwide by 2027.
The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic is the political leader of the Global Gateway initiative.
Global Gateway Priorities
The strategic sectoral priorities of the Global Gateway are building transport, digital and energy infrastructure, supply chains, sustainable energy sources, and capacity in health and education.
Global Gateway Flagship Projects
Flagship projects are the main tool for implementing the Global Gateway. In order to effectively achieve the EU’s strategic objectives, flagship projects have a volume in the tens to hundreds of millions of euros. These projects must be aligned with the initiative’s sectoral priorities, make a substantial contribution to the development of the beneficiary countries and integrate the involvement of EU capital and companies.
Financing instruments for Global Gateway flagship projects
To mobilise capital for Global Gateway flagship projects, the EU uses resources allocated in the European Fund for Sustainable Development+ (EFSD+). These funds, in the form of a wide range of financing, guarantee and grant instruments, are used to mobilise additional capital resources from financial and development institutions. Institutions wishing to benefit from the EFSD+ must obtain a Pillar Assessment from the European Commission for this purpose. Eximbanka and SAMRS are the only institutions in Slovakia that have such an authorisation.
How Slovak exporters can join the Global Gateway initiative
A Slovak company that has the interest and capacity to implement projects falling within the Global Gateway strategic priorities has the opportunity to submit a proposal for its own flagship project to the European Commission in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Eximbanka or SAMRS. The potential implementation of the project has to be closely coordinated with the EU Delegation, the Embassy of the Slovak Republic in the beneficiary country and the European Commission already in the first phase. At the same time, the project must be one that can be described as strategic on the basis of its characteristics and the expected size of the investment.
