Rastislav Podhorec, MBA, CEO of Eximbanka , in an interview for TREND, talks about how export is no longer just about numbers and economic indicators.
How do you perceive the current state of Slovak exports?
Exports have long since ceased to be just about numbers and economic indicators. Global competition is intensifying significantly – many countries are targeting their exporters. Exporting is now not just an economic issue, but also a strategic one. It has become part of geopolitics, so it is important that Slovakia also has coordinated and strategic support in this area. Successful exporting is based on trust – in the partner, in the market, in the product and in the system that supports the exporter. That is why today we are also looking at exports as a strategic tool for strengthening Slovakia’s position abroad.
How does the role of the Eximbank change in this context?
We are becoming a bridge between European instruments and Slovak companies with export potential. We open ourselves to all companies – not only big players, but also small and medium-sized enterprises with the ambition to expand abroad. Eximbanka is active today – this can be seen in concrete results: we are supporting an infrastructure project in Uzbekistan, water projects in Kazakhstan, initiatives in Kenya or the renewal of energy infrastructure in Ukraine. Our goal is to unlock Eximbanka’s potential for the benefit of Slovak companies and help them grow in global markets.
Where do you see the greatest potential for our exporters?
The potential is in the combination of expertise and credibility. Companies that build on the quality of their products, technologies and partnerships can compete globally over the long term. Slovak companies have the potential to compete in the world because they have quality technical know-how, strong human capital and experience in areas such as engineering and energy, including nuclear power. Slovak companies are able to adapt and innovate quickly, giving them a real chance to succeed even in challenging markets.
How does Eximbank participate in export promotion?
Our task is to be a reliable partner for companies, whether large or small and medium-sized. We offer a wide range of export-related financial products, especially credit insurance, financing and guarantees. As a state export credit agency, we enable Slovak exporters to enter into trade and investment relationships where the commercial financial sector is less interested in taking on risk and we therefore fulfil a complementary function. In addition, Eximbanka has been authorised by the European Commission under the so-called Pillar Assessment, which also allows it to use European instruments and finance in supporting Slovak exporters.
What advice would you give to companies considering their first step across borders?
Above all, get to know the target market thoroughly – its needs, culture, legislation and business practices. Start small, but with a clear strategy and a reliable partner. Take full advantage of the support of institutions such as ministries, embassies, the Slovak Agency for Investment and Trade Development SARIO, the Council of Slovak Exporters or Eximbanka. It is also important to think about financing and risk insurance, especially for larger or technologically demanding projects. And last but not least – have courage. Slovak companies have the capacity and know-how to succeed on global markets.
What does the TREND Top Exporter of the Year award mean to you?
The award is a recognition of the work of Slovak companies and a confirmation that our tools and support make sense. Congratulations to all the nominees and to the winner – for courage, professionalism and building the reputation of Slovak exports. It is a motivation to continue working to provide Slovak exporters with a strong and coordinated system of support at home and abroad.
