They also represent an opportunity for Slovak companies to engage in international projects and supply chains with higher added value. This was highlighted at the seminar in Bratislava by Rastislav Podhorec, CEO of Eximbanka, who emphasised the role of export credit agencies in supporting these investments in a panel on project financing.

Eximbank was part of an expert discussion on the future of nuclear energy at the Deploy SMR seminar held in Bratislava under the auspices of the International Business Association in partnership with the Slovak Ministry of Economy and the U.S. Department of Commerce. The event brought together representatives from the public sector, industry and experts from several countries to discuss the development of the technology, building supply chains and opportunities for international cooperation.

Rastislav Podhorec, Director General of Eximbank, spoke in the panel Financial and Investment Strategies – Securing Project Finance, where he addressed the issues of financing nuclear projects and the role of export credit agencies in supporting these strategic investments.

The discussion confirmed that small modular reactors are increasingly resonating as a practical solution for stable and low-emission power generation. The wide potential of their use also creates concrete opportunities for Slovak companies to engage in various international projects and supply chains with higher added value.

Eximbanka has been monitoring developments in this area for a long time and declares its ambition to actively enter into the support of nuclear projects, including SMRs – especially through the support of Slovak exporters. At the same time, it participates in professional discussions and initiatives aimed at creating functional frameworks for the implementation of these investments.

“From our perspective, small modular reactors represent a combination of energy stability and industrial opportunity. From a financing perspective, however, it is not a lack of capital, but a matter of getting the risks right and having the confidence to execute the projects. Investors enter where it is clear who bears which risk and where there is a demonstrable ability to deliver. The key will be to move from pilot projects to replicable solutions that allow for scaling and wider private capital involvement,” said Rastislav Podhorec, CEO of Eximbanka.

An important part of this effort is the development of international partnerships. One example is the agreement on co-financing strategic projects between the export credit agencies of Slovakia and the United States, which paves the way for more effective financing of large-scale infrastructure and energy investments. Given the technological and capital intensity of nuclear projects, which involve a wide range of subcontractors from various countries, we plan to conclude similar cooperation and co-financing agreements with other international partners as well. Such partnerships also increase the feasibility of capital-intensive projects, such as small modular reactors.

In particular, creating a stable regulatory environment, predictable returns and workable risk-sharing mechanisms will be key from a financing perspective. It is these factors that determine whether individual projects become scalable and repeatable investments that can also attract institutional capital.

Eximbanka will continue to support projects that contribute to energy security, the development of innovative solutions and strengthening the competitiveness of Slovak exporters.

Small modular reactors (SMRs) are increasingly being profiled as a realistic solution for stable and low-emission power generation.
